Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder occurs when there is a problem with the joint itself or the muscles of the neck and head that control the joint. The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull. Doctors do not identify one cause for TMJ disorder, but the symptoms may occur after an injury to the face or head, chronic grinding or clenching of the teeth, arthritis in the joint and movement of the disc in the joint.
There are several symptoms of TMJ disorder that may appear on one or both sides of the face. It can be very painful and most often appears in women and people between the ages of 20 and 40 years. The most common symptoms are:
• Pain in the jaw or ear area that worsens when the mouth is opened wide such as during a yawn
• A popping or clicking sound that comes from the joint when the mouth is opened or closed
• The jaw gets stuck in one position
• Swelling around the jaw and ear
• Tenderness in the jaw muscle
In some cases, the symptoms may go away without any treatment. However, if they persist, it is recommended to find a treatment that is suitable for your unique case. During a consultation with our specialist, your TMJ disorder may be examined and the proper treatment recommended.
Some of the most common treatments are over-the-counter painkillers, mouth guards, physical therapy and counseling. However, these treatments can only go so far. That’s why we are proud to offer BOTOX® Therapeutic injections at our office.
During BOTOX® Therapeutic treatments for TMJ, the solution is skillfully injected into the target area. Treatments are designed to be quick and convenient, even for those with busy schedules.
While TMJ disorder may go away without any treatment, it can also come back without warning. This is why it is recommended to find and treat the cause. For example, if the cause is muscular, surgery may not be your best option.
During your consultation at Lougheed Laser Centre in Burnaby, our expert may examine your joint and ask questions to determine the cause of your condition.
