When you finally decide you need to get rid of the spider veins on your legs, you may want to look into intense pulsed light (IPL) photorejuvenation. The light is non-laser, high-intensity light that uses a wide spectrum of wavelengths for spider vein removal so they will gradually disappear.
How Does It Work?
The heat generated by the IPL coagulates the blood inside the tiny veins and destroys the vein walls. When the vein collapses and seals off, it forms scar tissue. After a few weeks, the body will naturally remove the scar tissue and the vein will disappear for good. Since the light goes deeper into the skin than laser light, IPL is considered the best treatment for spider vein removal on the face.
Will the Spider Veins Come Back?
Once a spider vein is removed it cannot come back. It is important to understand that new spider veins may form if the conditions are right. If you have varicose veins or other vein issues, new spider veins can form. Some reasons spider veins may form are:
• Regular and long-term exposure to sunlight
• Excessive alcohol consumption
• Injury or trauma
• Hormonal changes
• Changes in temperature
If you have any of the above conditions in your life, you may want to modify your lifestyle to lower the risk of new spider veins developing.
What to Expect
You will first have an initial consultation with our professionals and your spider veins will be examined. Your medical history will be evaluated, including any medications you take or medical conditions you may have. If you are a good candidate for IPL, you will be asked to keep the treatment area out of direct sunlight as well as tanning beds and not use tanning products for at least one month before the procedure.
The spider vein removal procedure will be performed in our office by a trained technician. It may take from 15 – 45 minutes depending on the number and location of the veins. You may need several treatments about six weeks apart to achieve the results you want.
There is no recovery time required. You can go back to work or other daily activities immediately after the treatment. If the treated area feels warm, you can apply ice packs and should avoid hot showers, saunas and baths on that day after the treatment. You should avoid direct sunlight for about four weeks and always use a high-SPF sunscreen.
